Roden Harlowe had competed for the throne in The False Prince. He is described as tan, healthy looking, and the strongest of all the other boys.
The False Prince
Roden was originally from the same orphanage as Latamer, who was killed by Cregan, as an example. . He was one of the most desperate, along with Tobias, to get chosen, and was originally chosen, though because of him unable to do a trick that Prince Jaron did, Sage was chosen in his place.
Roden betrayed Jaron, having been secretly training with Cregan, and the others at the end of the book, challenging Jaron to a duel. Roden and Jaron fought but Jaron didn't want to kill him, so he let him run, never to come back to Jaron's sight anymore.
The Runaway King
Roden became evil and harboured anger towards Jaron so he became a pirate, with his purpose now being to destroy Carthya and kill Jaron.
After many fights, a twist came in the end of The Runaway King, resulting in him and Jaron to become good friends, with Jaron naming Roden Captain of the Carthyan Guard.
The Shadow Throne
The bond between the characters grow and Roden finds out that Harlowe is his father.
